Our Story

We are the Whonnock people, a proud and resilient community rooted in the lands colonially known as British Columbia. Despite the challenges we have faced, we continue to reclaim our identity, culture, and rightful place on our ancestral lands.

For years, our people were considered “extinct,” as we were amalgamated into another nation without our consent. This decision stripped us of our distinct status, land, and recognition. Yet we are still here. Our voices remain strong, and our commitment to our people, our land, and our future has never faltered.

Through the Xwéwenaqw Xwexwilmexw Cultural Reclamation Society, we unite to restore what was taken from us. Our goal is to reclaim our homelands, revitalize our culture, and ensure that future generations flourish. By sharing our story, we heal our community and connect with others seeking to honor their own roots and traditions.

We acknowledge that our journey forward involves collaborating with neighboring Nations. Many of our neighbouring nations recognize the deep ties they share with Whonnock lands and also strive to honor our intertwined history. We welcome these discussions and hold firm to the belief that through unity and respect, we can build a future that reflects our ancestors’ values and teachings.

Our existence and resilience are living proof of the strength of the Whonnock people. We are not extinct. We are thriving, and we will continue to uplift our community, restore our lands, and celebrate the traditions that shape who we are.

This video provides a powerful glimpse into the journey and resilience of the Whonnock people. By sharing our efforts to reclaim our lands, preserve our traditions, and assert our rightful place in history, this interview invites you to witness our determination firsthand. We warmly welcome you to watch and learn more about our community’s story, and hope that in doing so, you will join us in honoring the enduring spirit of Indigenous identity, connection, and unity.
